Shepard was commander of Apollo 14, the third mission to land astronauts on the Moon. During the mission's second surface excursion, he took several one-handed swings because the stiffness of his pressure suit made a normal golf stance impossible. He later joked that one ball traveled “miles and miles and miles,” although modern image analysis estimates the shots went about 24 and 40 yards.

The golf club was not a standard club carried for recreation. Shepard secretly arranged for a modified club head to fit inside his equipment, then attached it to the tool handle on the lunar surface. He brought the club head back, and a replica is displayed at the National Air and Space Museum.

A common mix-up is associating the stunt with Apollo 11 or Buzz Aldrin, who also walked on the Moon. Shepard and lunar module pilot Edgar Mitchell were the Apollo 14 astronauts who explored the surface; Stuart Roosa remained in lunar orbit.
