Which anti-drug advertising campaign featured the 1987 television commercial showing an egg in a frying pan?

The story behind the answer

The 1987 frying-pan commercial belonged to the anti-drug campaign commonly known as “This Is Your Brain on Drugs.”

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America produced the advertisement. It showed a person holding an egg and saying that the egg represented the brain, then frying it while explaining that drugs damage the brain. Its simple visual analogy made the commercial highly memorable and widely parodied.

The campaign followed earlier American anti-drug efforts such as “Just Say No,” a slogan associated with First Lady Nancy Reagan during the 1980s. The frying-pan advertisement was a separate campaign and did not use that phrase as its title.

Critics later argued that the commercial oversimplified drug effects and did not distinguish among substances. Even so, its imagery became one of the best-known examples of public-service advertising in the United States.
