Which Antarctic current helps deliver nutrient-rich water to penguin feeding grounds around the continent?

The story behind the answer

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current helps deliver nutrient-rich water to penguin feeding grounds around Antarctica.

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current, often abbreviated ACC, flows from west to east around the continent. It is the only ocean current that circles the globe without being blocked by a continent, linking the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean sectors of the Southern Ocean.

Strong winds and the current’s interactions with the seafloor and continental margins help drive mixing and upwelling. These processes bring nutrients toward the surface, supporting phytoplankton, krill, fish, and the predators that depend on them, including many penguin species.

The current is not a penguin species’ food source by itself. Rather, it helps shape the marine ecosystem on which penguins rely. Local currents, sea ice, seasonal productivity, and fronts also determine where birds can feed successfully.
