Which animal represents the west in Taoist cosmology?

The story behind the answer

The White Tiger represents the west in Taoist cosmology. It is one of the Four Symbols, celestial guardians associated with the four cardinal directions, seasons, colors, and the Five Phases.

The White Tiger is linked with the west, autumn, the color white, and the Metal phase. Its astronomical identity comes from seven lunar mansions in the western section of the traditional Chinese sky, which together form the image of a tiger.

The other three symbols complete the directional set: the Azure Dragon belongs to the east and spring, the Vermilion Bird to the south and summer, and the Black Tortoise—or Black Warrior—to the north and winter. In Taoist traditions these creatures could also receive divine names and ritual roles.

The White Tiger is not merely a general symbol of strength. In Chinese cosmology, its western association connects it to sunset, autumnal decline, metal, and martial protection. The phrase “White Tiger of the West” is therefore more precise than treating the animal as an ordinary zodiac sign.
