Mr. Tumnus is a faun in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia books. He first appears in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, where Lucy Pevensie meets him in a snowy wood after entering Narnia through the wardrobe.
A faun is a mythological being with a human upper body and goat-like legs and features. Lewis gives Mr. Tumnus a red scarf, an umbrella, a flute, and a warm but anxious personality. He initially serves the White Witch, yet chooses to protect Lucy rather than betray her.
Mr. Tumnus is sometimes called a satyr because both figures belong to classical and later fantasy traditions involving human-animal forms. In Lewis’s text and the standard descriptions of the character, however, he is a faun. His meeting with Lucy is one of the series’ most recognizable introductions to Narnia.
