Which animal appears on the Porsche crest?

The story behind the answer

A horse appears at the center of the Porsche crest.

The horse comes from the coat of arms of Stuttgart, the German city where Porsche is headquartered. Stuttgart’s name is associated with a stud farm, and the city’s heraldic arms therefore feature a black horse on a yellow shield. Porsche incorporated that local symbol into its crest in 1952.

The crest also includes the arms of Württemberg-Hohenzollern, red-and-black stripes, antlers, and the Porsche name. These regional elements explain why the badge looks more like a heraldic coat of arms than a modern abstract logo.

The horse is sometimes confused with Ferrari’s prancing horse. Both emblems feature a horse, but they have different origins: Porsche’s horse is tied to Stuttgart, while Ferrari’s horse became associated with a wartime pilot’s family emblem and later with Ferrari’s racing identity.
