Which Angola landmark is a 105-meter-high waterfall on the Lucala River?
Answer
Kalandula Falls
Answer
Kalandula Falls
The 105-meter-high waterfall on Angola’s Lucala River is Kalandula Falls. It lies near the town of Calandula in Malanje Province, in northern-central Angola, where the river spreads across a broad rocky ledge.
Kalandula Falls is approximately 105 meters (344 feet) high and about 400 meters (1,300 feet) wide. That broad curtain of water makes it visually different from narrow plunging waterfalls, and its flow can vary considerably with seasonal rainfall. The falls are regarded as one of Africa’s largest waterfalls by volume.
The site was formerly known as Duque de Bragança Falls, a colonial-era name. The modern name reflects the nearby town and the surrounding Angolan landscape. Kalandula is roughly 360 kilometers (220 miles) from Luanda, Angola’s capital.
The wrong options are waterfalls in other countries: Tugela Falls is in South Africa, Ouzoud Falls is in Morocco, and Ruacana Falls lies on the Angola–Namibia border. The alternate spelling “Calandula Falls” also appears in Portuguese and English references.
