Which Android version was the first to drop dessert names?

The story behind the answer

Android 10 was the first Android version to drop dessert names in its public branding.

Earlier releases used names such as Cupcake, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie. Although these names were popular with users, Google found that the alphabetical dessert system was not equally clear or accessible worldwide. Android 10 therefore launched with a numerical name and a redesigned Android brand identity.

The change affected public branding, not the operating system’s internal development culture. Engineers and code references could still use dessert-related or version codenames, but the consumer-facing release was simply Android 10. The number also made version order easier to understand across languages and markets.

Android 10 was released in 2019 and introduced features including system-wide dark theme, gesture navigation improvements, stronger privacy controls, and support for foldable devices. Android 9 Pie was the final publicly marketed dessert-named release.
