Which Android version first supported the Vulkan graphics API?
Answer
Android 7.0 Nougat
Answer
Android 7.0 Nougat
Android 7.0 Nougat was the first Android version to support the Vulkan graphics API. Vulkan 1.0 support arrived as an optional platform capability, giving developers a lower-level alternative to OpenGL ES.
Google added Vulkan platform support during the Android N developer-preview cycle in 2016, before the final Android 7.0 release on August 22. Vulkan was designed to reduce driver overhead and give applications more direct control over graphics hardware, potentially improving performance and efficiency in games and other demanding visual applications.
Support in Nougat did not mean that every Nougat phone had a Vulkan-capable graphics processor or driver. Device makers still needed compatible hardware and drivers, so actual availability varied by model. This is why “Android supports Vulkan” and “every Android device supports Vulkan” are different claims.
Android 8.0 Oreo is sometimes chosen because it brought broader platform maturation, but it was not the first version. Later releases increased requirements and expanded support; Android 9 added optional Vulkan 1.1 support, while newer Android compatibility rules became more demanding for suitable 64-bit devices.
