Answer
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
Answer
Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
The ancient wonder that was a temple dedicated to Artemis in Ephesus was the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus.
The Temple of Artemis, also called the Artemision, stood at Ephesus near modern Selçuk in Turkey. It honored the Ephesian form of Artemis, a locally important goddess associated by the Greeks with the goddess of the hunt. The sanctuary was rebuilt several times, and its grandest versions were celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
A major reconstruction began around 550 BCE with financial support from Croesus, king of Lydia. The marble temple was designed by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes and was famous for its enormous size and richly decorated columns. It was destroyed by arson in 356 BCE, traditionally attributed to Herostratus, and later rebuilt on an even larger scale.
The final temple survived for centuries but was eventually destroyed after Christianity became dominant in the region. Today, only foundations and scattered fragments remain. Readers sometimes confuse this wonder with the Parthenon, but the Parthenon was dedicated to Athena in Athens; the Ephesian temple honored Artemis and stood in Ephesus.
