Which ancient Persian empire was ruled by the Arsacid dynasty from about 247 BCE?
Answer
Parthian Empire
Answer
Parthian Empire
The Arsacid dynasty ruled the Parthian Empire from about 247 BCE.
The Parthian Empire emerged when Arsaces I and his followers established control in Parthia, a region in northeastern Iran. The Arsacid rulers gradually expanded westward and eventually controlled a large territory stretching across Iran and Mesopotamia.
Parthia was not governed as a uniformly centralized state. Powerful local dynasties retained considerable autonomy, while the Arsacid king depended on aristocratic families and regional military forces. This flexible structure helped the empire survive for nearly five centuries, but it could also make succession and central control unstable.
Parthia was Rome’s major Iranian rival before the Sasanians replaced the Arsacids. Its armies were famous for mounted archers and cataphracts, and its art blended Iranian, Greek, and Central Asian influences.
