Which ancient Mesopotamian king founded the Third Dynasty of Ur?

The story behind the answer

Ur-Nammu founded the Third Dynasty of Ur. He ruled in the late 21st century BCE after defeating the ruler of Lagash and establishing a powerful state centred on the Sumerian city of Ur.

His reign began a period often called the Ur III period, during which a highly organised bureaucracy managed taxation, labour, agriculture, and the movement of goods. Thousands of administrative tablets from this era survive, giving historians unusually detailed evidence about government.

Ur-Nammu is also associated with major building works, including the great ziggurat at Ur, although later rulers completed or expanded parts of the complex. He sponsored temples and restored religious institutions throughout his realm.

He is sometimes confused with his son Shulgi, who ruled longer and became the best-known king of the dynasty. Ur-Nammu is also associated with one of Mesopotamia’s earliest surviving law collections, written before Hammurabi’s famous code.
