Which ancient Egyptian structure is the largest pyramid?
Answer
Great Pyramid of Giza
Answer
Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid built in ancient Egypt.
Also called the Pyramid of Khufu or Cheops, it was constructed during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom as the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu. Building probably took about 26 years, around the middle of the third millennium BCE. The pyramid originally stood about 146.6 meters high, making it the tallest human-made structure in the world for more than 3,700 years.
Its core is mainly local limestone, while finer white limestone casing came from Tura and granite for the inner chambers was transported from Aswan. Researchers estimate that construction used roughly 2.3 million stone blocks. Most of the smooth outer casing disappeared over time, leaving the stepped-looking core visible today.
The Great Pyramid is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one still largely intact. It is sometimes confused with the Pyramid of Khafre, which appears taller from certain viewpoints because it stands on higher ground and retains casing stones near its summit.
