Which ancient civilization is the primary setting of Assassin's Creed Origins?

The story behind the answer

Ancient Egypt is the primary setting of Assassin's Creed Origins. The game follows Bayek of Siwa and Aya during the first century BCE, as they become involved in the events that lead to the formation of the Hidden Ones.

Released in 2017, Origins explores a broad version of Ptolemaic Egypt. Locations include Siwa, Alexandria, Memphis, Cyrene, and the Giza plateau. The campaign features Cleopatra and Julius Caesar during a period of political conflict involving the Ptolemaic dynasty and Rome.

Origins is set before the formal Assassin Brotherhood seen in later games. Bayek and Aya's organization, the Hidden Ones, is presented as the predecessor of the historical Assassin Brotherhood.

The setting is sometimes described simply as Egypt, but it is more precise to call it Ptolemaic or ancient Egypt. The game also depicts areas beyond Egypt, including parts of ancient Libya and the Levant.
