Which ancient civilization is the main historical setting of Assassin's Creed Origins?

The story behind the answer

Ancient Egypt is the main historical setting of Assassin's Creed Origins.

The game takes place during the first century BCE, near the end of the Ptolemaic period. Its protagonist, Bayek of Siwa, is a Medjay who becomes involved in the origins of the Hidden Ones, the organization that later develops into the Assassin Brotherhood.

Players explore places such as Alexandria, Memphis, Siwa, and Giza. Historical figures including Cleopatra VII and Julius Caesar appear in the story, which uses the political struggles of the period as the backdrop for the fictional conflict between the Hidden Ones and the Order of the Ancients.

Origins was released in 2017 and introduced a more prominent role-playing structure, including character levels, equipment statistics, and dialogue choices. It is often confused with Assassin's Creed Odyssey, whose historical setting is classical Greece several centuries earlier.
