Which Amsterdam institution, established in 1609, became an important model for modern central banking?

The story behind the answer

The Bank of Amsterdam, established in 1609, became an important model for modern central banking.

The Amsterdam city government created the bank to improve the reliability of payments in a busy international trading centre. Merchants could deposit coins and receive book credits, reducing the confusion caused by numerous currencies and differing coin qualities.

The bank did not operate exactly like a modern central bank. It primarily provided a stable payments system and maintained accounts rather than issuing a national currency under a modern monetary-policy framework. Its reputation helped make Amsterdam a major financial centre during the Dutch Golden Age.

The institution weakened during the late eighteenth century as loans to the city and the Dutch East India Company undermined confidence. It was eventually closed in 1819. Its deposit-bank model influenced later thinking about trusted settlement institutions.
