Which American won the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon in 2010?

The story behind the answer

John Isner won the longest match in tennis history at Wimbledon in 2010.

In the first round of the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, the American 23rd seed defeated French qualifier Nicolas Mahut 6–4, 3–6, 6–7, 7–6, 70–68. The match lasted 11 hours and 5 minutes and was played across three days, from June 22 to June 24, because darkness repeatedly stopped play.

The astonishing fifth set lasted 8 hours and 11 minutes. Unlike modern deciding sets with a tiebreak, Wimbledon used an advantage final set in 2010, so the players had to keep holding serve until one could lead by two games. The score reached 59–59 before the second suspension for darkness.

The match produced numerous records, including 183 total games and 216 combined aces. Isner served 113 aces, while Mahut hit 103. Wimbledon later introduced a final-set tiebreak at 12–12 in 2019, and the Grand Slam tournaments adopted a standardized ten-point final-set tiebreak at 6–6 in 2022. Sam Querrey, Mardy Fish and Andy Roddick were not Isner's opponent.
