The American television sitcom about a witch who marries an ordinary man and tries to live as a suburban housewife is Bewitched.
Created by Sol Saks, Bewitched premiered on ABC in 1964 and follows Samantha Stephens, played by Elizabeth Montgomery. Samantha is a witch who marries Darrin Stephens, a mortal advertising executive, and agrees to limit her magic so they can live an apparently ordinary suburban life. Her supernatural relatives, especially her mother Endora, repeatedly interfere with the marriage.
The series ran for eight seasons, ending in 1972, and blended domestic comedy with fantasy. Dick York originally played Darrin, but Dick Sargent took over the role in 1969 because York’s health problems prevented him from continuing. Samantha’s signature nose-twitching gesture became one of television’s most recognizable visual gags.
A common mix-up is I Dream of Jeannie, another 1960s fantasy sitcom involving a supernatural woman and an ordinary man. However, Jeannie is a genie, not a witch, and the two shows have different characters and premises. Bewitched also inspired a 2005 feature film loosely based on the original series.
