Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy in 2023 after operating the Bed Bath & Beyond and Buy Buy Baby chains.
The retailer filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States on April 23, 2023. It had faced falling sales, heavy debt, inventory problems, and unsuccessful attempts to attract customers through aggressive promotions and strategic changes.
The bankruptcy process led to the liquidation of Bed Bath & Beyond’s remaining U.S. stores. Overstock.com later acquired Bed Bath & Beyond’s intellectual property and other assets, allowing the brand name to continue online. Buy Buy Baby’s intellectual property was sold separately.
The company was founded in 1971 as Bed 'n Bath and later expanded into a large home-goods retailer. Its bankruptcy is often confused with the earlier failures of other department-store chains, but Bed Bath & Beyond specialized primarily in household goods rather than broad department-store merchandise.
