Laugh-O-Gram Studio, founded by Walt Disney, filed for bankruptcy in 1923 after producing the Alice Comedies.
Disney established the Kansas City studio in 1921 with animator Ub Iwerks. It produced short animated films, including the early Alice Comedies pilot, which combined animation with live action. The studio struggled financially because distributors failed to pay promptly.
Laugh-O-Gram declared bankruptcy in July 1923. Disney then moved to California, where he and his brother Roy founded the Disney Brothers Studio. That later company became the foundation of The Walt Disney Company.
A common mix-up is calling Laugh-O-Gram the original Disney studio in California. It was actually based in Kansas City, while the later Disney Brothers Studio began operations in Hollywood.
