Which American photographer and gallerist was Georgia O'Keeffe’s husband?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe’s husband.
Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, publisher, and gallery owner who helped introduce modern European art to the United States. He first encountered O'Keeffe’s work through drawings shown by the artist and promoter Anita Pollitzer.
Stieglitz exhibited O'Keeffe’s art at his New York gallery, 291, beginning in 1916. Their professional relationship became personal, and they married in 1924. Stieglitz also photographed O'Keeffe extensively, creating hundreds of portraits over many years.
The couple maintained an important but sometimes complicated artistic partnership. O'Keeffe spent increasing amounts of time in New Mexico, while Stieglitz remained based largely in New York. He died in 1946, and O'Keeffe later became a major independent figure rather than merely a subject of his photographs.
