Which American photographer and art dealer became Georgia O'Keeffe's husband in 1924?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz became Georgia O'Keeffe's husband in 1924.
Stieglitz was a major American photographer, gallery owner, and promoter of modern art. He first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings through photographs sent to him by the artist and educator Anita Pollitzer. Stieglitz exhibited O'Keeffe's work in New York in 1916.
Their professional relationship developed into a personal one. Stieglitz separated from his first wife, Emmeline Obermeyer, and married O'Keeffe on December 24, 1924. He was 23 years older than O'Keeffe and continued photographing her throughout their relationship.
The marriage linked O'Keeffe to the influential New York art world, but she increasingly sought independence from Stieglitz's circle. They lived apart for long periods, especially after O'Keeffe began spending more time in New Mexico, while remaining married until Stieglitz's death in 1946.
