Thomas Nast helped popularize Santa Claus through illustrations published in *Harper’s Weekly*.
Nast was a German-American caricaturist and political cartoonist. Beginning in the 1860s, he created influential Christmas illustrations that showed Santa Claus as a cheerful, bearded figure connected with gifts, families, and holiday celebrations.
His drawings helped develop the image of Santa as a large, friendly man who lived at the North Pole and prepared presents. These details became increasingly familiar in American popular culture during the nineteenth century.
Nast did not create every feature associated with Santa, and later artists further standardized his appearance. His work is nevertheless a major link between earlier Saint Nicholas traditions and the modern American Santa Claus. His political cartoons also helped popularize symbols such as the Republican elephant.
