On which night is Santa Claus traditionally said to deliver gifts to children?

The story behind the answer

Santa Claus is traditionally said to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve, the night before Christmas Day.

In the familiar modern story, Santa travels overnight on December 24 in a sleigh, visits homes while families sleep, and leaves presents to be discovered on the morning of December 25. The tradition explains why children are encouraged to go to bed early and why Santa is associated with nighttime visits.

This custom developed alongside European gift-bringer traditions and the growing American image of Santa Claus in the 19th century. Earlier figures, including Saint Nicholas, were connected with different feast days, especially December 6, so customs vary around the world.

Christmas Eve delivery is not universal. In some countries, gifts are exchanged on Saint Nicholas Day, Epiphany, Christmas Day, or another local holiday. Even so, the overnight Christmas Eve visit is the best-known Santa tradition internationally.
