Which American industrialist’s art collection inspired the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum?
Answer
Solomon R. Guggenheim
Answer
Solomon R. Guggenheim
American industrialist Solomon R. Guggenheim’s art collection inspired the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
Guggenheim began collecting traditional art but became increasingly interested in abstract and non-objective painting. Hilla von Rebay played a major role in guiding his interest toward artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and other pioneers of abstraction.
The museum’s name identifies its founding patron, not its architect. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the New York building, while Peggy Guggenheim established a separate collection in Venice. These different Guggenheim figures are a common source of confusion.
Guggenheim’s collection was first displayed through the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, founded in 1939. The institution later moved into Wright’s permanent building and was renamed the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1952, before opening at its Fifth Avenue location in 1959.
