RadioShack filed for bankruptcy in 2015 after operating thousands of stores across the United States.
The company filed for Chapter 11 protection on February 5, 2015. Its difficulties included intense competition from online retailers, declining demand for some electronics, weak mobile-phone performance, and a large store network with high operating costs.
After the filing, General Wireless acquired many RadioShack assets and operated stores inside selected Sprint locations. RadioShack’s brand continued through later ownership changes, licensing arrangements, and online operations, although its original nationwide retail presence largely disappeared.
RadioShack is often confused with Circuit City, another major American electronics retailer that entered bankruptcy in 2008 and liquidated in 2009. RadioShack’s 2015 filing was a later event and initially aimed at reorganizing rather than immediately ending all operations.
