Foyt shared the overall victory with fellow American Dan Gurney in a Ford GT40 Mk IV. Their car led from the second hour and completed 388 laps, covering more than 5,200 kilometres. The result was one of the most significant American achievements in endurance racing.
The 1967 victory was an entirely American success: the drivers were American, the Shelby-American team entered the car, Ford supplied the chassis and engine, and Goodyear supplied the tyres. It remains the only Le Mans overall win featuring an all-American driver pairing.
Foyt was already a major American racing star, having won the Indianapolis 500 multiple times. His Le Mans triumph also made him one of the relatively small number of drivers to win both the Indy 500 and the world’s most famous endurance race. Dan Gurney later became famous for spraying champagne on the podium after the victory.
