S&P Dow Jones Indices operates the Dow Jones Industrial Average index.

S&P Dow Jones Indices is a joint venture between S&P Global, CME Group, and News Corp. It administers and licenses the Dow Jones Industrial Average, commonly called the Dow, along with many other financial indexes.

The Dow was created by Charles Dow in 1896 and originally tracked 12 companies. It later expanded to 30 large U.S. companies. Unlike a market-capitalization-weighted index such as the S&P 500, the Dow is price-weighted, meaning companies with higher share prices have greater influence regardless of their total market value.

The index is often confused with the New York Stock Exchange, which is a trading venue rather than the Dow's operator. It is also different from the Dow Jones media company, whose historical publishing business helped give the index its name.
