Which American artist did Georgia O'Keeffe marry in 1924?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe married the American artist Alfred Stieglitz in 1924.
Stieglitz was a pioneering photographer, gallery owner, and influential promoter of modern art. He first exhibited O'Keeffe's abstract charcoal drawings in 1916 at his New York gallery, 291, without initially knowing her personally.
Their relationship became both romantic and professionally important. Stieglitz photographed O'Keeffe extensively, while O'Keeffe developed an independent reputation as a painter. They married on December 24, 1924, and divided much of their time between New York and Lake George.
Stieglitz remained O'Keeffe's husband until his death in 1946. The marriage should not be confused with a simple mentor-pupil partnership: O'Keeffe was already an ambitious artist, and later accounts emphasize her distinct artistic identity.
