Which America250 initiative invited students in grades 3–12 to answer, “What does America mean to you?”

The story behind the answer

America’s Field Trip is the America250 initiative that invited students in grades 3–12 to answer, “What does America mean to you?”

The contest encouraged students across the United States and its territories to submit creative work expressing their views of the country. Entries could include artwork, essays, poems, videos, or other approved formats, depending on the contest rules and grade level.

The program connected the 250th-anniversary commemoration with education rather than limiting participation to public ceremonies. Winning students were offered special experiences at important American historical or cultural sites, with travel and lodging provided for selected first-place recipients and a chaperone.

America’s Field Trip is easy to confuse with America Gives, which focused on volunteer service, or Our American Story, which collected personal and community histories. America Innovates, another America250 program, centered on innovation and entrepreneurship rather than student reflections on national identity.
