Which Amazonian reptile is the largest species in the alligator family?

The story behind the answer

The black caiman is the largest species in the alligator family and a major aquatic predator of the Amazon Basin.

Adult black caimans can exceed 5 metres in length, although such exceptionally large individuals are uncommon. They inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, flooded forests, and wetlands across much of northern South America. Their dark coloration helps them absorb heat and may provide camouflage in dim water.

Black caimans eat fish, birds, turtles, and mammals. Large individuals can take substantial prey, including capybaras. Females build mound nests from vegetation and guard their young after hatching.

The species was heavily hunted for its valuable hide during the twentieth century, causing serious declines in some areas. Conservation measures have helped populations recover in parts of its range, but habitat loss and illegal hunting remain concerns.
