Which Amazonian parrot is the world’s largest flying parrot?

The story behind the answer

The hyacinth macaw is the world’s largest flying parrot and is native to central and eastern South America, including Amazonian habitats.

With vivid cobalt-blue plumage, a yellow eye ring, and a yellow patch beside the lower bill, the hyacinth macaw is one of the most recognizable birds associated with Brazil. Adults can reach about 1 metre in total length, although much of that measurement comes from the long tail.

The species eats palm fruits, seeds, nuts, and other plant material. Its powerful bill can crack very hard shells, including those of palm nuts. Hyacinth macaws often nest in tree cavities, and they may also use cavities in large palms or cliffs.

The bird’s range is broader than the Amazon Rainforest alone: important populations occur in the Pantanal and other Brazilian regions. Habitat loss and historic capture for the illegal pet trade reduced numbers, although conservation programs have helped protect wild populations.
