Which Amazonian city is the capital of Peru’s Loreto Region?

The story behind the answer

Iquitos is the capital of Peru’s Loreto Region and one of the largest cities in the Peruvian Amazon.

The city lies on the Amazon River system in northeastern Peru and is notable for its isolation from the country’s road network. In ordinary travel, Iquitos is reached by air or by river rather than by a direct road from Peru’s coastal cities. Its position makes it an important commercial, administrative, and cultural center for the surrounding rainforest.

Iquitos expanded rapidly during the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century rubber boom. Rubber wealth produced landmarks such as the Iron House, a building associated with designs attributed to Gustave Eiffel, although its history is more complicated than the popular story suggests.

Iquitos is often confused with Pucallpa, another major Peruvian Amazon city. Pucallpa lies farther south on the Ucayali River and has road connections to the rest of Peru. Iquitos, by contrast, is the regional capital of Loreto and is especially known for its river access and geographic isolation.
