Colombia is the Amazon rainforest country home to the UNESCO-listed Chiribiquete National Park. The park lies in Colombia’s southern Guaviare and Caquetá departments and protects a vast landscape of rainforest, rivers and distinctive table mountains.
Chiribiquete is famous for thousands of Indigenous rock paintings found on cliff faces and rock shelters. Some images depict animals, people, hunting scenes and ceremonial activity. UNESCO added the park to its World Heritage List in 2018 because of its exceptional natural and cultural importance.
The area is remote and difficult to access, which has helped preserve both its ecosystems and archaeological record. The park is sometimes described simply as an Amazon site, but its tepui-like rock formations also create habitats unlike the surrounding lowland forest.
