Which Amazon Rainforest bird is the national bird of Guyana?
Answer
Hoatzin
Answer
Hoatzin
The hoatzin is the Amazon Rainforest bird that serves as Guyana’s national bird.
The hoatzin, Opisthocomus hoazin, lives mainly in swampy forests and river-edge vegetation across the Amazon and Orinoco basins. It feeds largely on leaves, an unusual diet for a bird, and has an enlarged digestive system that ferments plant material in a way broadly comparable to digestion in some herbivorous mammals.
Young hoatzins have claws on two wing digits. These claws help nestlings climb through vegetation and escape into water when threatened, a feature that has led to comparisons with the prehistoric bird Archaeopteryx. The resemblance is functional rather than evidence that hoatzins are direct living descendants of that fossil bird.
The species is also called the stinkbird because fermentation can produce a distinctive odor. Guyana adopted it as a national symbol because of its uniqueness and local presence.
