Which alternative rock musician released the 1999 album When the Pawn...?

The story behind the answer

The alternative rock musician Fiona Apple released the 1999 album When the Pawn....

When the Pawn... is the commonly shortened title of Fiona Apple's second studio album. Its full title is a 90-word poem written by Apple after reading negative newspaper reviews of her debut album, Tidal. The record was produced by Jon Brion and features complex piano arrangements, shifting rhythms, and emotionally direct lyrics.

The album's complete title begins "When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king..." and ends with "...and she will rise." Because of its length, it is widely identified by the shorter form When the Pawn. The album includes "Fast as You Can," "Paper Bag," and "Limp." It followed Tidal by three years and reached number 13 on the Billboard 200.
