The Breeders released the 1993 album Last Splash, featuring the hit single “Cannonball.”
The Breeders were formed by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses. For Last Splash, Deal led a lineup that included Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs, and Jim Macpherson. The album became the group’s commercial breakthrough and reached the top 40 of the Billboard 200 in the United States.
“Cannonball” is recognized for its instantly identifiable bass-and-drum opening, distorted guitar, and abruptly shifting vocal textures. Other songs on Last Splash include “Divine Hammer” and “Saints.” The album helped demonstrate how alternative rock could retain noisy, unconventional elements while reaching a broad audience.
The Breeders are often confused with Deal’s principal band, the Pixies. Deal played bass and sang in the Pixies, but Last Splash is a Breeders album. The group’s debut album, Pod, arrived in 1990, making Last Splash their second full-length studio release.
