The alternative rock band that released the 1989 album Doolittle is Pixies.
Doolittle was Pixies’ second studio album, following Surfer Rosa, and it became one of the most influential records associated with late-1980s alternative rock. The album was produced by Gil Norton and released by 4AD in the United Kingdom and Elektra Records in the United States.
Its songs include “Debaser,” “Wave of Mutilation,” “Monkey Gone to Heaven,” and “Here Comes Your Man.” The record’s loud-quiet dynamics, surreal lyrics, and compact arrangements helped establish the band’s distinctive sound. The album title refers to the character Doctor Dolittle, while several songs draw on biblical and environmental imagery.
Doolittle is sometimes confused with Surfer Rosa because both albums are central to Pixies’ reputation and were produced before the band reached a wider audience. Surfer Rosa came first, in 1988; Doolittle followed in 1989 and achieved substantially greater chart success.
