Which alternative rock band recorded the 1995 single “Wonderwall”?

The story behind the answer

Oasis recorded the 1995 single “Wonderwall.”

The song was written by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher and sung by his brother Liam Gallagher. It appeared on the band’s second studio album, (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, released in October 1995. The recording features acoustic guitar, orchestral strings and a prominent melodic vocal line, giving it a more intimate character than many of Oasis’s louder rock songs.

“Wonderwall” became one of the defining international hits of the Britpop era. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart and became Oasis’s highest-charting single in the United States. The title was inspired by Wonderwall Music, the 1968 soundtrack album by George Harrison.

A common mix-up is the song’s authorship: Liam sings it, but Noel wrote it. “Wonderwall” is also frequently confused with “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” another major Oasis single written by Noel but sung by Noel himself.
