Is This It was the debut studio album of the alternative rock band The Strokes.
Released in 2001, Is This It introduced The Strokes’ concise guitar sound to a broad international audience. Julian Casablancas wrote the lyrics, while the band’s interlocking guitars and tight rhythm section drew on New York rock, garage rock, and post-punk influences. Gordon Raphael produced the album.
The record includes “Last Nite,” “Someday,” and “Hard to Explain.” Its stripped-back production and short songs became associated with the early-2000s garage-rock revival. The cover differed between the United States and other markets: the original image was replaced for the American release. Is This It is sometimes confused with Room on Fire, the band’s 2003 second album, but Room on Fire followed the debut and continued its compact songwriting approach.
