PJ Harvey won the 2011 Mercury Prize for her album Let England Shake.
Released in 2011, Let England Shake was PJ Harvey’s eighth studio album. It was produced by Flood and John Parish, with Mick Harvey also contributing. The record examines English history, war, empire, and national identity through poetic and often unsettling songs.
The album was recorded in a church in Dorset, England, and its sound includes guitars, saxophones, layered vocals, and arrangements that draw on folk and psychedelic traditions. Songs include “The Words That Maketh Murder,” “The Glorious Land,” and the title track.
Harvey had previously won the Mercury Prize for Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea in 2001. Her 2011 victory made her the first artist to win the prize twice. Let England Shake is therefore different from her earlier Mercury-winning album, despite both being major landmarks in her career.
