Beck released the alternative album Odelay in 1996.
Odelay was Beck’s fifth studio album and was released on June 18, 1996, by DGC Records. Beck made the album with producers the Dust Brothers, Beck Hansen, and other collaborators. Its arrangements combine alternative rock, hip-hop production, folk, blues, country, and electronic sampling in a deliberately collage-like style.
The album includes “Where It’s At,” “Devils Haircut,” “The New Pollution,” and “Jack-Ass.” “Where It’s At” became one of Beck’s best-known songs and helped introduce the album’s playful, sample-heavy sound to a wide audience. The record’s title was adapted from a word associated with Beck’s young son.
Odelay is sometimes confused with Mellow Gold, Beck’s 1994 major-label debut, which contains “Loser.” Odelay followed it and represented a more elaborate studio approach. The album won two Grammy Awards in 1997, including Album of the Year and Best Alternative Music Performance, making it a defining release of 1990s alternative music.
