Beck released the alternative song “Loser,” which became one of the defining singles of the 1990s.
The song first appeared as an independent 12-inch single on Bong Load Custom Records on March 8, 1993. It was recorded with producer Carl Stephenson, who built a looping instrumental from guitar, drums, sitar and samples while Beck improvised lyrics. The resulting mix of acoustic guitar, hip-hop rhythm, surreal lines and slacker-era irony sounded unlike a typical radio hit.
After unexpected airplay on Los Angeles modern-rock stations, “Loser” attracted major-label attention. DGC Records reissued it in 1994, and Beck included it on his album Mellow Gold, also released that year. The re-release reached number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and topped the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.
A common mix-up is the release date: the song originated in 1993, but its major-label breakthrough and album association are firmly linked with 1994. Beck later became known for moving freely among alternative rock, folk, funk, hip-hop and electronic styles.
