Bauhaus released the 1979 single “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.”
The song was Bauhaus’s debut single and was recorded at Beck Studios in Wellingborough, England. Its sparse bassline, echoing guitar, unconventional percussion, and Peter Murphy’s dramatic vocal helped shape the emerging gothic rock sound.
The song’s title refers to Bela Lugosi, the Hungarian-American actor famous for playing Count Dracula in the 1931 film Dracula. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” appeared in the 1983 film The Hunger, which helped introduce Bauhaus to a wider audience.
The recording was issued independently on Small Wonder Records and lasts more than nine minutes. It is often described as an early gothic-rock landmark, although Bauhaus emerged from the broader post-punk scene. The single was not a conventional chart hit at the time, but its influence grew substantially afterward.
