Which Allied statement of July 1945 set the surrender terms offered to Japan?

The story behind the answer

The Potsdam Declaration set the surrender terms offered to Japan in July 1945.

Issued on July 26, 1945, the declaration called for Japan’s armed forces to surrender and outlined the Allied conditions for ending the war. It was issued by U.S. President Harry Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek.

The declaration demanded Japan’s disarmament, the removal of militarist influence, and the limitation of Japanese sovereignty to the home islands and other territories specified by the Allies. It warned that rejection would bring “prompt and utter destruction.”

Japan did not immediately accept the declaration. After the atomic bombings, the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan, and intense debate within the Japanese government, Emperor Hirohito supported acceptance. Japan announced its decision in August, then signed the formal surrender instrument on September 2.
