Potsdam Declaration
Answer
Potsdam Declaration
Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration in Emperor Hirohito's 1945 surrender announcement.
The declaration was issued on July 26, 1945, by the United States, the United Kingdom and China. It demanded Japan's unconditional surrender and outlined broad Allied aims, including the elimination of Japanese militarism and the occupation of Japanese territory needed to enforce the settlement.
The document warned Japan of “prompt and utter destruction” if it refused. Japan initially rejected it publicly by using the term mokusatsu, commonly translated as ignoring or withholding comment. After the atomic bombings and the Soviet entry into the war, Japanese leaders reconsidered the demand.
Hirohito's broadcast stated that the government had been ordered to accept the provisions of the joint declaration. The Soviet Union had not signed the original July declaration, but joined the war against Japan in August and became one of the Allied powers represented at the formal surrender ceremony.
