Answer
Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers
Answer
Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers
Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan's surrender as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.
MacArthur signed the Instrument of Surrender at 9:08 a.m. on September 2, 1945, aboard USS Missouri. His signature came after the two Japanese representatives and before the individual Allied national representatives.
The title reflected his authority over the occupation and surrender arrangements, not a claim that he personally represented every Allied government. Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz signed separately as the United States representative, followed by officials representing China, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
MacArthur had been appointed Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers before the formal occupation began. He directed the Allied occupation of Japan and remained its central American authority until the occupation ended in 1952.
