Lemonade is Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album about infidelity, race, and family.
Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records released Lemonade on April 23, 2016. It was Beyoncé’s sixth studio album and was presented with an hour-long film that premiered on HBO. The project blends R&B, pop, rock, blues, country, soul, and hip-hop.
Its songs move through themes commonly described as intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, hope, and redemption. The album’s personal imagery prompted widespread discussion about marriage and betrayal, while its historical and cultural references connected private experience with the lives of Black women.
Lemonade earned widespread critical acclaim and won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album. It was nominated for Album of the Year, although that award went to Adele’s 25. Beyoncé’s later visual-album projects should not be confused with this specific 2016 release.
