Released by Motown on October 14, 1983, Can’t Slow Down was Richie’s second solo studio album after he left the Commodores. Its polished blend of pop, R&B, soul, and dance music established him as a major solo star and produced five singles that reached the Billboard Hot 100’s top ten.

“Hello” became one of Richie’s signature ballads and reached No. 1 in the United States. “Running With the Night,” co-written with Cynthia Weil, showcased a more energetic sound; its electric-guitar solo was played by Toto guitarist Steve Lukather. The album also included “All Night Long (All Night),” another chart-topping hit.

Can’t Slow Down became Richie’s best-selling album. It was certified Diamond by the RIAA for U.S. sales exceeding 10 million copies and sold more than 20 million worldwide. The album won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1985.
