The Jack White album nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards was Lazaretto. Released in 2014, it was White’s second solo studio album after Blunderbuss and followed his work with the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather.
Lazaretto blends blues, garage rock, hard rock, country touches, and experimental studio ideas. Its title track was inspired in part by a story White wrote as a teenager and became one of the album’s best-known songs. The record was especially notable for its ambitious “Ultra LP” vinyl edition, which included unusual features such as hidden tracks, different playback speeds, and audio pressed inside the vinyl.
The album competed in the 57th Annual Grammy Awards against releases including St. Vincent, Alt-J, Arcade Fire, and Cage the Elephant. St. Vincent won Best Alternative Music Album, so Lazaretto was a nominee rather than the winner. White did, however, win Best Rock Performance for the album’s title track.
